northbound 101 after a big rig carrying a satellite got stuck on the freeway. >> it did. cbs 5 crews first on the scene. it happened this morning at the tally road ex knit san jose. anne makovec explains how the chp was finally able to get that big rig off the freeway. >> reporter: it is a wide load. with nowhere to go. but back. and when you're driving on highway 101, it is easier said than done. >> you have no choice. you can't get unthe bridge. we've got to go back -- under the bridge. we've got to go back. >> reporter: as part of the tully road construction project, the overpass has been lowered to 15 feet and this truck is 16 feet tall. >> they didn't know how low it was until they got here, yes. >> so the big rig carrying part of a satellite for lockheed martin bound for sunnyvale had to pull over and make a plan b. >> these guys are going to have to go back. >> reporter: with help from the chp and caltrans, plotting on the shoulder. >> turn the truck around and go back to the next one. >> reporter: and doing that, it required shutting the highway
12:02 pm
down. >> this is something you don't see very often. a completely empty highway 101 northbound. it will be this way only for a couple of minutes. the chp shut it down between capital expressway and tully, as well as the capital expressway on-ramp, so the wide load could make it off. now, questions about how caltrans issued the wide load permit for the planned route. >> we were trying to figure out exactly what is going on. typically when we do this sort of a thing, we make appropriate notification about the changes in the lateral and vertical clearances. >> so are you annoyed with caltrans over this? >> we have to work with them all the time, so no comment. >> reporter: in san jose, anne makovec, cbs 5 eyewitness news. >> we got to keep everybody happy there. >> i like the little giggle there. and a milestone construction of the bay bridge, and crewed finished hoisting the fourth segment of the tower
12:03 pm
and get this, they're ahead of schedule. >> christin ayers is in oakland to show us what comes next. >> reporter: hi there. caltrans officials are calling this an historic day. as you said, it is a full day ahead of schedule. if you take a look over my shoulder here, you can see that main tower of the new bay bridge. it is almost done. right now, surrounded by scaffolding, just 45 feet shy of its height when finished. caltrans officials knew this was going to be a gigantic job. 12 men and women charged with hoisting four 500-ton steel legs over the bay to form a tower. it was supposed to take 120 hours. instead, crews finished in 92 hours flat. >> early this morning, about 1:25, we officially completed the fourth leg of the south anchored suspension bridge main tower. >> reporter: that was despite wind, rain and rough waters on tuesday, which temporarily halted the work. this time lapse video shows just how susceptible the steel
12:04 pm
legs were to blustery winds, as this leg is lifted over several hours, the steel sways precariously. >> we had to do this four times. >> reporter: the crews are resting now. but caltrans says they have momentum. and a full day's head start. and are already looking ahead to the next bridge project. the next step is to put the crown on top of the four legs. that is where this massive chunk of steel comes in. it will go on top of the four legs, crews will place it there in april. >> the piece is what the main cable will actually sit in and be secured. it holds the rest of the bridge up. >> reporter: when it is complete, caltrans says it will be a bridge unlike any other. suspended by one cable, built to shift in the event of a large earthquake. and all together, this bridge, estimated to cost around 5 1/2 billion dollars, much of it paid for in full money, and it won't be done until 2013, so authorities tell me it is a little bit too early to know whether these early finishes will give them an advantage

12:06 pm
collective bargaining and the reason why collective bargaining works is common sense comes to the table and finds solutions to help the city with services. >> before this is all signed and done, the rank and file need to approve the deal. the union president says ratification meetings are scheduled for the weekend. protesters at cal declaring victory. a sit-in high above the uc berkeley campus finally ended late last night. but the promise from the administration to hold a town hall meeting. eight students, you see them there, had chained themselves together for a seven-hour time frame on the fourth floor ledge to protest cuts in education funding and they say school officials met their demands. >> basically, they agreed to the, the administration, to have a town hall meeting with us, to talk to the student, faculty and worker, and have an open dialogue about issues about operational excellence and the budget cuts. >> those protesters were cited and released. no word on when the town hall

we were the first to ban smoking on airplanes. the first to have smoke-free bars and restaurants. all while saving over $86 billion in health care costs... and over a million lives. we've done a good job. but even if you were born today, you'd still grow up in a world where tobacco kills more people... than aids, drugs, alcohol, murder and car crashes... combined. we have a lot more work to do. in libya, the fight to control that country is
12:10 pm
intensifying. at least 30 people have been killed in attacks today. troops loyal to libyan leader moammar gadhafi are reported to have attacked both sides of the rebel city. but failed to take it. one of gadhafi's closest allies, venezuelan president hugo chavez is offering to mediate an end to the crisis, but rebel leaders say it is too late now for diplomacy. and thanks to all of that political unrest in libya, gas prices continue to soar here in the united states. aaa says the average price is now $3.47 a gallon. that is up about $0.04 since yesterday alone. and prices have now shot up $0.28 in the past 10 days. and get this, california has the highest average price in the nation. that is at $3.85. and in some parts of the bay area, like san francisco, we are seeing prices over 4 bucks a gallon for regular. airline fares are also soaring to cover the rising costs of jet fuel. this week, delta added a $20 fuel surcharge. several other carrier, including american, u.s.

12:16 pm
concerning. >> reporter: wall street hopes one good month will lead to another. when companies start seeing the economy gaining strength, they're more willing to add to their payrolls. fed chief ben bernanke says things are going in the right direction. >> i think the key here is that instead of unemployment stagnating or going up, that we see a sustainable recovery moving forward. >> reporter: the strongest hiring was in factories. education and health care. and retailers cut jobs. and so did state and local governments. all told, over 13.5 million people are still looking for work. for calvin gordon, being unemployed has been both a financial and a psychological blow. >> i'm not a person that is made to stay home. i can't, you know, so this is really kind of driving me crazy. >> reporter: the economy has been growing for six straight quarters but in the job market, there is a long way to go. there is still twice as many unemployed as there were before the start of the recession. alexis christophorous, cbs

12:18 pm
and even inside the bay with a mixture of high clouds and out to the coastline, a little cooler and maybe 50s and low 60s tonight and a lot of clouds making their way into the skies and temperatures in the 30s and 40s, and patchy fog, and also some more moisture moving off the coastline, and well, we've got more clouds on the way for the weekend, and beginning to see a few of the high clouds, streaming across our skies right now, not going to bring us any rain just yet and i think as we head to the latter part of the day tomorrow, showers developing north of the golden gate bridge. for today, nice and dry with mild temperatures outside. as we look toward the weekend, it looks like it could get a bit wet and it doesn't look like a major washout but a chance of storms moving in, it looks like late in the day on saturday and if you plan to head to the high country, this is a great day to do it. the roadways are looking fantastic. as you get up there, though, be prepared for stormy weather. bring the chains with you now. this is a warm storm system headed toward the bay area and the high country and the snow levels may be very high, with a rain and snow mix. and the bay area temperatures,

retired. wrinkles. dark circles. they've caused everything from too much sun to genetics. >> or too little sleep, true. >> and dr. kim mulvilhill shows there is another culprit in the bedroom. >> how you sleep was probably determined by your mother when she tucked you in. >> unfortunately, we tend to stay sleeping in the positions that we were placed in when we were very young. >> and that puts us flat on our faces. >> my generation, we went to sleep on our stomachs, and that's how i sleep. >> when we first wake up, most of us have bed crinkles from the pillow case. but over time, those lines can turn into permanent wrinkles. >> it was like this. >> a pillow wrinkle bothered 23- year-old courtney little so much she has already tried botox. >> i just thought it really stuck out to people. it is an insecurity of mine, i don't know. >> experts say the best way to avoid pillow wrinkles is to sleep on your back and make sure you stay there, put a

pillow between your knees. >> i often tell my patients they should invest in a good pillow case, a very high thread count. >> it is not just how you sleep but how much you sleep as well. these pictures are part of a swedish study on sleep deprivation. the photo on the left shows a man after eight hours of sleep. the one on the right, after he has been awake for 31 hours straight. and the doctors say, losing just a few hours will take a toll on your looks. >> you tend to have more of a droop and you don't hold your face up as well as when as you're well rested. >> photos like these are enough to make some people change their position on the best way to sleep. >> i didn't know that. so i might change to being a back sleeper. >> and dr. kim tells us not drinking enough water throughout the day is a big mistake. doctors say it will also show on your face the following morning. >> well, i better get going here. >> better get some sleep, too. >> and coming up, charlie sheen's rant landed him in the

well, today's tip of the day is spring mix. and certain times of the year the spring mix gets a little bit bigger and the color isn't really there because it is between growing seasons like right now but what is out there is pretty good. you have to select them and store them right because otherwise they won't taste that good whatsoever. what is spring mix? a variety of baby lettuces put together and the more color in the display, the more of a variety you have. when you buy them, look for different colors and different textures. nice and bright like this and nice and fresh. a lot of markets have spring mix and a wet rack and when the water hits them, you know what happens, they start to decay. i like them dry in a cool area without hit with the moisture. at home, that's what you should do, too. put them in the refrigerator and open up the bag. spring mix. in the market. great prices right now. and it was $10 a pound but now it is less expensive, and every year, there is a bargain. i'm tony tantillo your fresh
